History Saturday 10 August 1991, from the salmon viewing area at the Mendenhall Glacier: a quarter marathon of 6.55 miles and a half marathon of 13.1 miles. Despite the Golden North Salmon Derby running at the same time, it drew what organiser Wendie Marriott called a record field of 89. Weather cloudy and mild with no rain.
Winners, quarter marathon: Frank Young 33:52 and Arturo Rodriguez 33:56, both inside Rick Thibodeau's standing mark of 34:46. Women: Lisa Kirsch 38:38, Jetta Whittaker 44:07 and Margaret Feige 44:11 - all three inside Dawn Rider's 44:32, which had stood since 1989.
Winners, half marathon: Dan Kelliher of Sitka 1:13:55, Jim Douglas 1:14:55, Chip Lende 1:15:38. Al Graves, who holds the course record at 1:10:38, was fourth in 1:16:42. Women: Terri Branton 1:50:36, Chris Winter 1:53:38, and Leslie Weaver and Marian Koelsch tied for third in 1:55:56.
Mik Segin, from Czechoslovakia and speaking little English, had chosen the half marathon but inadvertently turned round at the quarter-marathon marker, so the organisers sent him out again. He completed two 6.55-mile courses for a half marathon and won the men's 50-59 division in 1 hour 23 minutes.
Lineage, as the preview set it out: "The Capital City Run, in one form or another, has been a local fixture for over a decade, but like a chameleon it keeps changing appearance. The race began as the Capital City Marathon, with a half- and quarter-marathon course offered simultaneously. By 1989 the marathon had been dropped for lack of participation, but since then, with a few course changes, the 13.1-mile half-marathon and 6.55-mile quarter-marathon has grown in popularity." That is why this event and the 1990 one are filed with the CBJ Juneau Marathon, whose half and quarter these courses continue: three of the four course records the preview lists are held in this archive under that series, at exactly the times and years the paper gives.
Held here: 88 finishers against a stated field of 89, with no gap in any division's places.
Two figures that do not reconcile. The paper says Young and Rodriguez took 54 and 58 seconds off the old mark; against the 34:46 it prints as that mark, Young's 33:52 is 54 seconds exactly while Rodriguez's 33:56 is 50. The times are stored as printed. And the preview gives the women's half-marathon record as Shelly James, 1:25:03 in 1989, where this archive holds her at 1:23:39 in 1988 over the same distance in the same series. Neither is corrected.
