A fund-raiser for middle school cross country running teams, co-organised by Whitey Bloom. A race in the Empire Cup Runners Series - the second to last of the 1991 season.
History Saturday afternoon, 28 September 1991, at Floyd Dryden: a 5-kilometre race and a 1-kilometre race for younger runners, raising money for middle school cross country teams. Co-organiser Whitey Bloom said it drew a record field.
Winners, 5-K. Overall: Guy Thibodeau 16:18. Fastest woman: Claire Brooks 23:02. 5-K boys: Skye Stekoll 20:33.
Winners, kilometre, limited for the most part to runners aged 14 and under: Damian Eckhout 3:53 for the boys, Jennifer Hodges 3:45 for the girls.
The boys' division was a three-way rivalry. Skye Stekoll, Travis Zangri and Asher Hall - teammates at Marie Drake - had kept it at a fever pitch since the previous spring and finished the Empire Cup Runners Series boys division 1-2-3. Stekoll's win added 10 points to a season total of 151, the most of any runner in the series. Zangri and Hall came home eight seconds later, dead level on the clock, with Zangri ahead by a step. Marie Drake coach Whitey Bloom: "All three are excellent runners. They trade places for who comes in first every race. You never know which one it will be."
Held here: 87 finishers. The report gives no field total, so there is no external count to check them against - only that every division runs consecutively from first place with no gaps.
Names: one runner in the men's 40-49 is printed with an initial for a given name, as "N Johns", and is recorded that way. Two women's names differ from the way the archive holds them - Claire for Clare Brooks and Debra for Debbie Boyd - and both rows say so.
Shine: the 5-K men's 14-19 is won by Jim Shine Jr., with Jim Shine ninth in the men's 40-49. Three 1990 lists placed the father in the 30-39 division, one of them spelling him "Jim Shine Sr." outright.
