Saturday 6 October 1990, at North Douglas. A field of almost 90 across three races - a mile, a 5K and a 10K - set up as one event, all three counting for the Empire Cup Runners Series. Of the runners, the Empire counted 21 aged 19 and under, 16 of them under 13. Course: the 10K started at the False Outer Point car park, headed south on North Douglas Highway to the intersection with Fish Creek Road, and returned to the finish at the starting point. The 5K and mile ran shorter loops. Winners. Mile: Kathy Miller 6:44 for the women, the fastest over the distance; Matthew Kacmarski 7:05 for the men, leading the young runners with an overall victory. 5K: Arturo Rodriguez 17:10, with Dave Avila second and Roger Kacmarski third; Shelly James 18:48 for the women, from Sue Norvell and Sue Cheeley. 10K: Al Graves 34:26, from Frank Young 34:34 and Jim Douglas 35:24; Jetta Whittaker 44:32 for the women. Youth count: the Empire's 21 aged 19 and under does not quite reconcile - the three 13-and-under divisions hold 16, and the men's 10K 14-19 holds four. The twenty-first is presumably in one of the mile's two "Others" divisions, which the paper leaves unaged.
